Nicolas de Staël

Nicolas de Staël was a celebrated French painter known for his distinctly abstracted landscapes rendered with thickly applied oil paint, often by palette knife. His deeply personal and expressive work features overlapping blocks of densely saturated color, vacillating between representational and the abstract. Firmly eschewing any explanation or interpretation of his art, De Staël explained that “all my life, I had a need to think painting, to paint in order to liberate myself from all the impressions, all the feelings, and all the anxieties of which the only solution I know is painting."
