Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1975, Ellie Omiya graduated from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. First achieving popularity as a writer, primarily for her essays about daily life, she has since worked in a variety of mediums, including film, radio, television, theatre, and interactive painting performance. Author, screenwriter, director, artist – the multi-talented Omiya transcends rigid forms of expression with ease, ever looking for new means of communication.

What started out as a series of live solo exhibitions performed in 2012, her exploration of painting gradually developed, becoming a central focus as she began to expand her artistic practice in the realisation of large-scale canvases and mural works. As a versatile creator her liberated imagination continually challenges the possibilities of art without constraints. Flowers, trees and landscapes are vividly depicted through the artist’s emotion, moving the viewer into a lively experience which surpasses the mere act of viewing. She is currently working on a mural for the Inujima Residence project by the architect Kazuyo Sejima (SANAA) and has been selected to participate as a leading artist in the Setouchi International Art Festival in 2022.
